Dinner Theatre | On Golden Pond - event ticket

Special Events | June 29, 2018

Tamarack’s Governor Hulett C. Smith Theater presents our second play for 2018 Tamarack’s Dinner Theatre Series, On Golden Pond by Ernest Thompson. For the series, dinner begins at 6:30pm in the Conference Center; the play begins at 8pm in the theater.  There is a cash bar and music piano music by Debbie Bowling during dinner. The box office and lobby cash bar open at 7pm in the theater lobby and the house opens at 7:30pm. The lobby bar will remain open until 20 minutes after intermission. Tickets are $48 per person (plus tax and processing fee).

On Golden Pond is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. He is a retired professor, nearing eighty. Even with a few health concerns, he is still as tart-tongued, observant and eager for life. Ethel, ten years younger, is the perfect foil for Norman, and delights in all the small things that enrich their long life together. They are visited by their daughter and her new fiancé; who leaves his teenage son behind for the summer. The boy quickly becomes the "grandchild" the elderly couple longed for, and Norman revels in fishing trips and sharing books with the boy. As the summer wanes, so does their brief idyll. They realize that time is now against them, but they grow closer together. They wonder if they will have another summer on Golden Pond.

First presented in 1979 to great critical and popular acclaim first off then on Broadway, this touching, funny and warmly perceptive study of a spirited and lovable elderly couple facing their twilight years introduced a significant playwright to our theatre. The play has received several Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations. The play was adapted for the screen, and the film On Golden Pond was released in December 1981, directed by Mark Rydell and starring Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn and Jane Fonda. In 2001, CBS aired a live television adaptation of the play that was heavily publicized in the press due to the reunion of former Sound of Music stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in the lead roles. It also starred Glenne Headly.

Treehouse Arts Ensemble returns to Tamarack to produce the modern classic. On Golden Pond is the thirteenth play Treehouse Arts has produced for Tamarack’s Dinner Theatre Series. Their first play for the series was produced in 2006.
