Film Screening | Break the Chain

Special Events | September 11, 2018

Tamarack is one of ten venues chosen as a host site for the 2018-2019 season of the On Screen/In Person program. Our first film of this series is Break the Chain directed by Laura E. Swanson. Laura will lead a community workshop and a Panel/Q&A after the film. The filmmaker will also teach a workshop about creating narrative for social justice documentary films. Admission is free to all events. Individuals and groups must preregister for the workshop

3pm – 4pm         Workshop taught by Laura Swanson, Filmmaker – How to Create a Compelling Narrative about Social Justice Issues in Film

5:30pm – 6pm   Meet and Greet Reception with Filmanker, Laura Swanson | Theatre Lobby

6pm – 7:05pm   Film screening of Break the Chain, in the Governor Hulett C. Smith Theater

7:15pm – 8pm   Panel Discussion and Q&A with Filmmaker, in the Governor Hulett C. Smith Theater

  • About the Film:   Break the Chain captures the first-hand accounts of Debbie and Kwami, two survivors of child sex and labor trafficking, to provide a startling look at how this overly sensationalized issue is, in reality, hiding in plain sight. Accompanied by interviews with those actively working to raise awareness and create creative solutions to combat this global problem, the film helps us learn that we have the power to change lives by choosing how we consume our information, and what we support. Directed by Laura Swanson.

  • About the Series: On Screen/In Person tours independent American filmmakers to communities across the mid-Atlantic region to screen their recent work and increase accessibility and appreciation for film through direct audience engagement. The filmmakers will tour with their films to the venues for public screenings which include question and answer sessions with the audience. Each filmmaker visit will also include a community engagement activity collaboratively developed by the filmmaker and Tamarack. On Screen/In Person is a program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation made possible through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts. The tour begins in the fall and culminates next spring. Admission to the films is free.
