Live at Tamarack | Lady D

Music | July 30

Take a blues journey as Lady D gives you a glimpse inside the life and lifestyle of America’s musical empress, Bessie Smith.
A unique blend of old and new, the music of the 1920’s and 30’s is brought to life and served up with a little bit of funk and a lot of attitude.

Bessie Smith, “Empress of the Blues” (1894 – 1937) is one of the most important women in the history of American music.  She was the first to change a folk expression into an indigenous art form by successfully blending African and Western modes of music.  The blues-jazz she sang is a significant base of one of America’s chief contributions to world culture.  She was a master performer with a commanding stage presence and a rich contralto that could project the deepest emotions.  She set a new standard of excellence.  People who saw her perform described her as Junoesque, mesmerizing, hypnotic and majestic; earning her the title, the “Empress of the Blues”

The performance is free and begins at 3pm, in Governor Hulett C. Smith Theater.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Dale Wasserman, adapted from the novel by Ken Kesey
Performed by the Kanawha Players of Charleston, WV

About One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ...

Randle P. McMurphy, a charming rogue who contrives to serve a short sentence in an airy mental institution rather in a prison. This, he learns, was a mistake. He clashes with the head nurse, a fierce martinet. Quickly, he takes over the yard and accomplishes what the medical profession has been unable to do for twelve years; he makes a presumed deaf and dumb Native American talk. He leads others out of introversion, stages a revolt so that they can see the World Series on television, and arranges a rollicking midnight party with liquor and chippies. For one offense, the head nurse has him submit to shock treatment. The party is too horrid for her and she forces him to submit to a final correction a frontal lobotomy.

Live at Tamarack | Orenda Duo

Music | September 17

Original music is the primary focus of the Orenda Duo.  With the addition of jazz standards, contemporary and familiar, as well as unique arrangements of popular song, they perform a program that appeals to a wide audience. The sound of the duo is influenced by traditional jazz, Americana, and classical music.  Not often heard as a melodic instrument, Nathan Wilson utilizes the singing quality of the double bass.  Jenny’s vocals have been compared to those of Diana Krall and Norah Jones and Carole King.  Jenny’s piano style is highly influenced by modern jazz pianists and by her classical training.  In a few words their music can be described as ‘subtle swing, lilting Latin, and cinematic original composition’.  They are experts at tailoring the music to fit the needs of the client and venue.

Orenda Duo will perform in Tamarack's Theatre starting at 3 p.m.

Live at Tamarack | Sheppard Brothers

| November 5

In November, The Sheppard Brothers Band return to Tamarack to perform live in our theater again.  The Sheppard Brothers is a bluegrass band based out of the Parkersburg, West Virginia area.  Although the band has been together 36 years, it has undergone very few member changes.  The three brothers, Terry, Mike, and Butch Sheppard have the rich, tight vocals associated with a family band.  Their connection as a group is very evident, whether they are singing the standards or delivering tasteful renditions of acapella gospel songs.
The performance is free and begins at 3pm, in Governor Hulett C. Smith Theater.
