Tamarack Foundation Fellowship Award
  

At the 2008 Tamarack Foundation Gala held September 20, 2008, three Tamarack artisans were awarded $2,500 each to recognize artistic excellence, accomplishment, dedication to discipline, lifelong community achievement and involvement in promoting and fostering the arts. Congratulations to Stan and Sue Jennings of Tornton, West Virginia, Jean Pierre Hsu of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia and Mark Schwenk, also of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. Further information on the artisans will be posted in the near future.
  

Three West Virginia artists whose work features interpretations of nature and history are the recipients of the 2009 Tamarack Foundation Fellowships Awards, presented at the Sept.19 Tamarack Foundation (www.tamarackwv.com/foundation) Gala in Beckley. 

            Ron Hinkle, a glass artist from Buckhannon; Lori Doolittle, a ceramic artist from Richwood, and Karen Vuranch, a performing artist from Fayetteville, were each presented with $2,500 awards at the event.  The artists may use the awards to further their work through education or equipment purchases.

Past Recipients

            In 2008, the awards were presented to Stan and Sue Jennings, Jean Pierre Hsu and Mark Schwenk.  In 2007, the awards were presented to Keith Lahti , Mik Wright and Robin Hammer and Chris Dutch.  In 2006, Julie Adams, Jeff Fetty and Jim Probst received the awards.




Funding for the fellowships was provided by a grant from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation. Other foundation programs include mentoring, apprenticeships, equipment leasing, professional development and relief aid.   The Artisan Resource Center located in Beckley is another successful Foundation project cooperatively supported by Mountain State University, the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Beckley Small Business Development Center. West Virginia artisans receive assistance in marketing opportunities and business planning.
