Before there was a popular scenic railroad at Cass, geared steam locomotives - primarily Lima Shays - met the often grueling demands of timbering.  The span of activity (1900 to 1960) involved 17 Shays and one Climax.  Two of the Shay survivors still operate at Cass. This is the story of machines that served the Cass logging road and then men who ran, fired and repaired them, with comprehensive text, 86 vintage photos and several maps.   Written by Cass history authority Philip V.
