This souvenir is a tribute to WWVA, its employees and entertainers who served the flood stricken Wheeling area with 92 ½ consecutive hours of broadcasting. Hour after hour their announcers stayed on the air, along with live musicians, to provide inspiration and encouragement for their listeners: Tuesday morning, March 17, 1936, at 9 a.m., Radio Station WWVA in Wheeling, WV received its first official warning that high water was on its way to Wheeling and surrounding country. The report advised the Ohio River would crest at 42 feet by Thursday morning, or six feet above flood stage. However, at 3 p.m. on Thursday, this raging giant of destruction reached 54.5 feet at the Wheeling Wharf. Approximately eight square miles of businesses and residential property was under water. Pictures of the ravaged area show the intensity of the flood. 16 pages.
